以前有一位国王，他独眼缺手断脚，却很爱面子。他很想将他那副尊容画下来，留给后代子孙瞻仰。于是请来全国最好的画家。这个一流的画家将国王画得很逼真，栩栩如生，很传神。但是，国王看了之后很难过，说：“我这么一副残缺像，怎么传得下去！”于是就把这位画家给宰了。
他们又请来第二位画家。第二位因有前车之鉴，不敢据实作画，就把国王画得圆满无缺。把缺的手补上去，把断的腿补上去，国王看了之后更难过，说：“这个不是我，你在讽刺我。”又把他给宰了。
第三位画家怎么办呢？写实派的给宰了，完美派的也给宰了。想了很久，急中生智，画了一幅国王单腿跪下闭住一只眼瞄准射击的肖像画。把国王的缺点全部掩盖，结果国王大大的奖赏了他。
